The name of the Grama Panchayat was 'Pudupally Village Union'. The area is still 'Pudupally Village'. It is said that the the word "Puthiya pally" later got its name "Puduppalli".  There is another argument.  It is related to Buddhism. Buddhists called their 'viharas' as "Palli". There is enough evidences indicating that many parts of Kollam and Alappuzha districts had Buddhist monasteries. Perhaps the region is derived from its relationship with Buddhism with the place name 'Pudupalli'. The present name of the panchayat (Devikulangara) is associated with the name of devikulangara temple.
